Database NNT05a Codebook (web ver. 1.0) of Individual Records of Non-metric Observations in Permanent Dentition


     Explanation of Abbreviations and Codes

     SPECID = Individual Burial Number
         First number is excavation locale
             NNT1 = 1966 excavation
             NNT2 = 1968 excavation

         followed the burial identification number.
            Example: NNT1-014 is First Season NNT Burial 014

     AGE
	1 YG ADULT = Young Adult (20-35 years)
	2 MIDAGED = Middle-aged Adult (35-50 years)
	3 OLD = Old Adult (50+ years)
	4 ADOL = Adolescent (15-20 years)
	5 CHILD = < 15 years
    	6 INFANT = 0-1 years
    	7 ADULT = 20-50 years
    	8 SUBADULT =  <20 years
        
     SEX = Sex of individual, ?female coded as FEMALE, ?male coded as MALE

     SITE = Site of excavation

     YEAREXAM = Year burial was examined

     INSTCODE = Institution where burial was examined
         SIR = Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand
         UNL = University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA


     These data follow the dental arcade beginning with the upper left third molar to the upper right third molar followed by the lower left 
     third molar to the lower right third molar.

     Fields 7-38 record  tooth presence, with the field name coded as follows:

     The first letter is the jaw location U = upper, L = lower;
     The second letter is the side R = right, L = left;
     The last letters are the tooth (e.g., M3 = third molar).

     
      Values for fields ULM3--LRM3 are:

         1 = present
         2 = postmortem loss
         3 = premortem loss
         4 = roots
         5 = evulsed
         6 = agenesis
         7 = unerupted
         8 = erupting
         9 = impacted

  Field names for fields ULI2SS--BETLRM3 include the non-metric code given below. Except for shovel-shaping, the tooth code follows the 
  non-metric code. Scoring for each non-metric variable is given below each code.

     ULI2SS--LRI2SS = Shovel-shaped incisors
         0 = absent
         1 = slight
         2 = moderate
         3 = marked

     PEG = Peg-shaped tooth
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     EE = Enamel extensions of the premolars and molars
         0 = absent
         1 = present
         2 = pearl

     PROT = Protostylid cusp scored on the lower molars
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     CAR = Carabelli's cusp scored on the upper molars
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     CUSP = Cusp pattern in the molars:
         Maxillary
             0 = 3-
             1 = 3
             2 = 3+
             3 = 4-
             4 = 4
             5 = 4+
             6 = wrinkled

         Mandible
             0 = +4
             1 = Y4
             2 = +5
             3 = Y5
             4 = wrinkled
