Database E.6 Codebook (web ver. 1.1) of Individual Records of Non-metric Observations and Pathology in Deciduous Dentitions in Children


     Explanation of Abbreviations and Codes

     SPECID = Individual Burial Number
         First number is excavation locale
             1 = BC, 1974 excavation
             2 = BCES, 1975 excavation

         followed by two spaces and then the burial identification number.
            Example: 1 14 is BC Burial 14

     AGEYR = Age of individuals 2 years and older. For individuals assigned a range of years the median year is given to the nearest half year. Age ranges 
     are given in the individual burial descriptions, Appendix C.

     AGEMO = Age of individual in months coded as follows:
         1 = 0-3 months
         2 = 3-6 months
         3 = 6-9 months
         4 = 9-12 months
         5 = 12-18 months
         6 = 18-24 months
         7 = 9-18 months

     SITE = Site of excavation

     YEAREXAM = Year burial was examined

     INSTCODE = Institution where burial was examined
         UHM = University of Hawaii at Manoa

     These data follow the deciduous dental arcade beginning with the upper left second molar to the upper right second molar followed by
     the lower left second molar to the lower right second molar.

     Fields 7-26 record the tooth presence:

     The first letter is the jaw location U = upper, L =lower;
     The second letter is the side R = right, L = left;
     The last letters are the tooth (e.g., M2 = second molar).

     Scoring for fields 7-26 is:
         1 = present
         2 = postmortem loss
         3 = premortem loss
         4 = roots
         5 = evulsed
         6 = agenesis
         7 = unerupted
         8 = erupting
         9 = impacted

  
   Non-metric observations in deciduous dentitions in children begin in field 27. Except for shovel-shaping, the tooth code
   follows the non-metric code in the field name.

     ULI2SS-LRI2SS = Shovel-shaped incisors
         0 = absent
         1 = slight
         2 = moderate
         3 = marked

     PEG = Peg-shaped tooth
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     EE = Enamel extensions of the molars
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     PROT = Protostylid cusp scored on the lower molars
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     CAR = Carabelli's cusp scored on the upper molars
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     CAL = Calculus
         0 = absent
         1 = slight
         2 = moderate
         3 = marked

     HYPO = Hypoplasia
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     CARI = Caries
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     ABC = Abscessing
         0 = absent
         1 = present

     ATT = Attrition
         0 = none
         1 = enamel wear
         2 = dentin exposed
         3 = pulp exposure
         4 = worn to the roots
